On June 17, SESAMm joined WeeFin and EthiFinance to co-host ESG Version Française, a morning of discussion held at Caisse des Dépôts in Paris. The event brought together investors, asset managers, and ESG leaders from across the French and European financial sector to address a question with real consequences for how ESG risk gets measured: how do you support European sovereignty in ESG evaluation, ratings, and analysis?
The starting point for the morning was a striking figure: roughly 60% of the global ESG data market is controlled by US-based providers. For European investors, that concentration creates a structural dependency that shapes methodologies, tooling, and ultimately investment decisions. ESG Version Française set out to move that conversation from diagnosis to action.
The morning opened with a conversation between Grégoire Hug, co-founder and CEO of WeeFin, and Josselin Kalifa, Director of the Investment Management Department at Caisse des Dépôts. Their discussion framed ESG sovereignty not as an abstract policy goal but as a competitiveness issue for European financial institutions, one that touches data access, methodological independence, and the ability to set standards rather than simply follow them.
The first panel, moderated by Carol Sirou, CEO of EthiFinance, examined what makes French ESG expertise distinctive and how those strengths can serve European sustainable finance more broadly. Panelists discussed the specific methodological rigor that French providers and analysts bring to ESG assessment, and why that expertise is a genuine asset rather than a niche approach, at a moment when European institutions are being asked to justify their ESG frameworks with more scrutiny than ever.
The second panel, titled "Actifs privés et technologie : quelles nouvelles frontières pour l'analyse ESG et la gestion des risques ?" (Private Assets and Technology: What New Frontiers for ESG Analysis and Risk Management?), was moderated by Sylvain Forté, CEO of SESAMm. The discussion focused on private assets specifically, the segment of the market where ESG data has traditionally been hardest to access, and on how AI driven technology is opening new frontiers for covering, analyzing, and monitoring risk on private companies at scale. Panelists discussed what these tools make possible today, from broader coverage of private assets to faster, more transparent risk analysis, and why technological capability is now central to the sovereignty conversation, not separate from it.
The morning closed with a final round of questions over coffee, giving attendees a chance to continue theconversation informally with speakers and fellow investors.

Climate risk on a private infrastructure asset can look completely different depending on where you look. Some assets carry obvious physical exposure but never hit the news until it’s too late. Others appear operationally resilient but generate a constant stream of controversies, fines, and local opposition. Most teams see only one side of the risk at a time.

The Nordics have long been global leaders in responsible investment. Nordic banks, pension funds, and asset managers were among the first to integrate ESG considerations into portfolio management and stewardship practices.
But the landscape is changing. Investors now face new types of risks that go beyond traditional ESG frameworks, including geopolitical tensions, supply chain controversies, and fast-moving reputational crises. At the same time, new technologies such as artificial intelligence are transforming how investors detect and interpret these signals.

On October 1st, SESAMm hosted its second annual “SESAMm Day” in Paris at the EY Impact Lab. The evening kicked off with the Paris 2043 immersive experience, an eye-opening scenario of Paris in 2043 should climate commitments fail. Designed to spark forward-looking discussions, the experience set the stage for a full evening of insight, exchange, and networking among peers across private equity, asset management, banking, and consulting.
The event also featured a dynamic 45-minute panel discussion moderated by Sylvain Forté, CEO of SESAMm, with three distinguished panelists:
The conversation opened with a critical challenge facing the industry: transforming abundant ESG data into actionable insights. The panelists discussed their approaches to filtering signal from noise, focusing on how controversy alerts, automated reports, and ESG scores inform actual investment, financing, and rating decisions. The key, they emphasized, lies in establishing clear hierarchies and methodologies to prevent information overload.
The panel also addressed the growing concerns around greenwashing, regulatory complexity, and "ESG fatigue." An interesting linguistic shift emerged during the discussion. One panelist noted that the term “sustainability” is increasingly preferred over "ESG" in job titles. In contrast, another panelist pointed out that 10-15 years ago, the trend was reversed, as the industry moved from sustainability to ESG.
While European skepticism focuses less on ESG fundamentals and more on complexity and costs, particularly with regulations like Omnibus, the panelists acknowledged growing operational fatigue. For example, the speakers highlighted that teams are demanding more pragmatism and concrete action over the burden of reporting.
Looking forward, the panel identified several emerging priorities:
Climate adaptation is taking center stage, with physical risks such as heatwaves and flooding becoming increasingly impossible to ignore. The future of ESG data will be increasingly forward-looking and predictive.
New themes are reshaping the ESG landscape. Biodiversity remains a work in progress requiring significant development. Responsible AI has emerged as both an ESG theme and a transformative force for the industry itself. Even defense has become a consideration as an exclusion or inclusion criterion, raising questions about which other exclusion themes might emerge or fade.
Supply chain risks are gaining prominence, particularly in emerging markets where local taxonomies and data remain scarce. One panelist shared that accessing reliable data on emissions and physical risks in these regions is challenging, with insurance data often providing the most qualified information.
The panel concluded with a pragmatic vision: rather than being overwhelmed by ever-increasing data, the focus should shift toward enhancing real-world impact and climate resilience. With reputational and financial risks mounting, the message is clear: it's time to move from reporting to action.
